Campus swine flu has become a serious topic after the out break of swine flu. It is said that the college campus is the most prone place for the development and spread of swine flu virus. The reason behind this is immediacy. Students get together in the hallways, canteens and lecture halls where virus gets an opportunity to spread at a higher rate. There are many waves of swine flu that targeted campuses across the country. The first wave of swine flu was seen in the southern hemisphere whereas the second wave of H1N1 virus is estimated to have arrived in the winter seasons at the northern hemisphere. According to the scientists the second wave has turned out to be more dangerous than the first wave.

The symptoms of swine flu are same as common flu and campus swine flu is no different. A person suffering from swine flu will feel lack of energy, cough, and sneeze, fever, vomiting, headache and muscle pain. They can also have diarrhea and other complications. The difference between swine flu and general seasonal flu cannot be determined easily. It is necessary for the college campus to remain alert because the targets of H1N1 virus are mostly young people and small children.

The older people above 65 years old generally remain unaffected from it if they don’t have any fundamental complications. Although quite a few antiviral drugs are now available in the market, a number of deaths in college campuses have been reported due to swine flu. The good thing is that many of the H1N1 virus infected patients recover with the right medication and proper diet.

It would be prudent to implement the following guidelines to prevent spread of swine flue:

Wash basins with liquid hand wash to be made available near gathering places within the campus.

Conduct awareness programs with the help of posters and banners within the campus.

Regular disinfection of toilet doors, switch boards, computer keyboards etc as these play crucial role in spreading of virus.

Availability of medical facility in the vicinity of the campus or within the campus.

The government also provides vaccines for swine flu which can be used to prevent spread of campus swine flu.

To stop the spread of swine flu in the college campus, the best idea is to grant leave to the student suffering from swine flu or suspend activities at college for some days if the virus is taking shape of an epidemic. It is also suggested that all students wear mask and wash their hands whenever needed. A new technology has also been introduced recently to make the environment free from viruses. This technology is known as UV Germicidal technology and it is found to be very effective in making the environment free from viruses. This could especially turnout to be effective in preventing spread of campus swine flu.
