In the year 1976 an American soldier’s dead body was examined to know the causes of his death and it was found that he was a patient of swine flu before death. This was the first case of swine flu and it was soon found that 500 more warriors were infected with the same disease but they were not sick. The 1976 swine flu paralysis was been compared with the outbreaks of 1918 when the soldiers of the First World War were found infected with it and it killed about 20 million citizens within a short span of time. Considering the severity of swine flu the vaccination on large scale was ordered by the US president to provide the people of America protection against pandemic of swine flu.
In October 1976, 45 million inoculation programs were started by the government which costed about $135 million. The Guillain-Barre Syndrome was soon found in the vaccinated people. This is a neurological situation which causes harm to the outer walls of the nerve cells. A person suffering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome can have temporary paralysis or weakness and at few instances death has also been reported for patients suffering from this symptom. The cure from this disease can take several months and is idiosyncratic. After two months of vaccination about 500 people reported symptoms of Guillian-Barre Syndrome and it became cause of concern for public health departments across United States. About 30 patients succumbed to this new and man made syndrome at that time, compared to swine flu which claimed only one life. Many people term this occurrence as 1976 swine flu paralysis.
After-effects of 1976 swine flu paralysis
Looking at the consequences, the Ford administration soon decided to abandon this vaccination plan. A large number of people filed court case on the Ford administration and in turn ford administration had to give compensation to the victims. Drug companies too became cautious while working with inoculations as unexpected results can bring huge monetary loss to them.
Looking at 1976 swine flu paralysis, the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program was set in 1980 by the Congress to pay the people who went through unwanted reactions of the vaccine after taking it.
However the reasons of this tragedy are still unknown to common people. There is no direct connection found between the GBS and vaccine till now but the biological link shows an association between them.
It is very hard for commoners like us to know the exact reason and appropriate medication to combat swine flu as the publicity and uncertainty about swine flu has totally confused us. The swine flu has been declared as a mild flu which is not a big problem nor has it caused so many deaths. The death rate of people is more due to the general seasonal flu every year.
However a lot of serious research about swine flu is still required to dig out the exact reason and also to find the right vaccination for it. Any half hearted or ill funded attempts might lead to another episode like the 1976 swine flu paralysis.
